The treason trial involving opposition leader Tundu Lissu entered a critical phase this week after a senior police officer told the court how authorities received intelligence alleging that groups of young people were being mobilised to disrupt the country’s next general election.
Testifying before the High Court of Tanzania in Dar es Salaam, Assistant Superintendent of Police Geofrey Aggrey described how information gathered by law enforcement suggested that certain individuals were encouraging resistance to the planned 2025 polls. The witness, who is attached to a regional anti-robbery unit, appeared as the ninth prosecution witness in a case that has drawn national and international attention because of its political implications.
The court heard that police began receiving reports indicating that some youths were communicating and organising with the aim of preventing the election from taking place. According to the testimony, the alleged efforts were linked to support for Mr Lissu, who also serves as national chairman of Chadema, the country’s main opposition party.
Prosecutors allege that the opposition figure made statements in April 2025 that were intended to incite members of the public to block the electoral process. The charge of treason, one of the most serious offences under the laws of Tanzania, carries severe penalties upon conviction.
During the proceedings, the prosecution presented excerpts of words attributed to Mr Lissu, in which he allegedly spoke about mobilising resistance and creating disruption in connection with the election. The court was told that investigators viewed those remarks as evidence of an intention to undermine the constitutional order.
The defence has strongly denied the allegations, maintaining that Mr Lissu’s statements were political expressions protected under the right to freedom of speech. Defence lawyers argue that their client was expressing dissatisfaction with the electoral environment rather than attempting to overthrow the government or incite rebellion.

The case is being heard by a panel of three judges, reflecting its seriousness and legal weight. Throughout the hearing, the courtroom has remained tense but orderly, with both sides presenting their arguments carefully as public interest in the outcome continues to grow.

Some observers view the proceedings as a test of how the justice system balances national security concerns with political freedoms, while others emphasise the importance of allowing the courts to operate independently without external pressure.
Mr Lissu, a prominent political figure and former presidential candidate, has long been known for his outspoken criticism of government policies. His political career has included dramatic moments, including surviving an assassination attempt in 2017 and spending years in exile before returning to active politics.
As the trial continues, more witnesses are expected to testify, and the court will ultimately determine whether the prosecution has proven its case beyond reasonable doubt. The outcome could have far-reaching consequences for the political landscape and the future of opposition politics in the country.
