Tanzania’s Vice President, Dr. Philip Mpango, has announced his intention to step down from his position, a decision that President Samia Suluhu Hassan shared with the nation during a special general meeting in Dodoma on January 19, 2025.

In her address, President Samia revealed that Dr. Mpango had recently approached her with a personal request to leave his role, citing health and personal reasons. “Dr. Philip Mpango came to me to share his wish to step down. He emphasized that his decision is not related to his duties or any challenges in his role but is purely personal. At 68 years of age, he wishes to focus on his health and well-being,” she explained.

The President acknowledged that she was initially reluctant to accept his resignation. “When he first submitted his resignation letter last week, I hesitated. Dr. Mpango has been a dedicated and effective leader, but after consulting with the Central Committee, we collectively agreed to respect his decision,” she said.

Dr. Mpango, who has served as Vice President since 2021, will remain in office until the General Election later this year to ensure a smooth transition and maintain stability in governance.

During his tenure, Dr. Mpango played a pivotal role in shaping and implementing economic policies and driving key public sector reforms. His leadership style and deep understanding of the country’s economic challenges earned him respect both nationally and internationally.

The announcement has sparked various reactions across the nation. Many citizens have praised Dr. Mpango’s dedication and service, expressing gratitude for his contributions to Tanzania’s progress. At the same time, some were surprised by the timing of his decision, particularly as the country approaches a critical election year.

Political analysts suggest that this move could prompt the ruling party to accelerate plans for identifying a new vice-presidential candidate. “This is a significant moment for Tanzania’s political landscape. It will test the leadership’s ability to ensure continuity while preparing for an electoral year,” remarked one commentator.
