A prominent Tanzanian politician and local ward chairman in Mwanza has issued a heartfelt call to religious leaders across the country, urging them to set aside sectarianism and focus on fostering national unity, moral leadership, and social cohesion.
Speaking in a televised interview, he warned that inflammatory statements targeting different faiths could provoke unrest and destabilize communities.
The politician stressed that leaders of both churches and mosques must respect each other and the communities they serve. “Respect your sacred texts. If a bishop gives guidance, listen; likewise, a sheikh deserves respect. This is not the time for favoritism or for highlighting differences between Catholics and Muslims. The nation must come first,” he said, emphasizing the need to mend social divisions rather than deepen them.
He urged leaders to use their influence responsibly, focusing on peace, reconciliation, and constructive dialogue rather than fueling disputes over land, politics, or past grievances.

“We are not here to criticize institutions or individuals. This is a time of mourning and reflection, a time to seek forgiveness and healing. Let’s prioritize social development and unity,” he added.
Observers note that his message reflects growing concerns about the misuse of religious influence in politics and social issues. In a society as diverse as Tanzania’s, where religion plays a significant role in daily life, leaders who promote tolerance and interfaith cooperation can prevent tensions from escalating.
The call comes against a backdrop of historical disputes and politically charged rhetoric that, if left unchecked, could spark future conflicts. By urging faith leaders to act as bridges rather than barriers, the politician hopes to reinforce the role of religion as a force for national stability.
Community members and analysts have welcomed the appeal, seeing it as a reminder that faith should unite people rather than divide them. Leaders who take this guidance seriously could play a pivotal role in fostering social cohesion, especially among young people and grassroots communities vulnerable to divisive narratives.
