USAID Completes Malaria Initiative in Tanzania

The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) announced the successful completion of the President’s Malaria Initiative (PMI) Vector Control Project, a four-year effort aimed at reducing malaria transmission in Tanzania.

The project, which concluded on December 12, 2024, distributed over 20 million insecticide-treated mosquito nets across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar, protecting over 35 million people from malaria.

As part of the initiative, USAID coordinated mass distribution campaigns, particularly targeting vulnerable groups such as children and pregnant women. The program reached 14 high-risk regions on the Mainland and all five regions of Zanzibar, covering 57% of Tanzania’s population.

USAID’s partnership with Tanzania spans more than six decades, with PMI investing over $747 million since its inception in 2006 to fight malaria. Mission Director Craig Hart praised the success of the PMI Vector Control Project, noting that while the project has concluded, the commitment to tackling malaria and other public health challenges in Tanzania remains strong.

The $43 million project, running from 2020 to 2024, was led by experts from the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs and other partners. Their efforts focused on reaching 90% of the at-risk population, a significant milestone in the country’s ongoing fight against malaria..
