Tom Fletcher, the United Nations humanitarian chief, has made a heartfelt appeal for the international community to take immediate action to address the deepening crisis in Sudan.
The ongoing conflict in the country is devastating millions, with countless people forced to flee their homes as fighting intensifies.
During a nine-day visit to Sudan and Chad, Fletcher met with refugees who have endured unimaginable hardship. He promised to amplify their voices and called on countries around the world to offer more assistance to help those affected by the violence.
“The situation is dire,” Fletcher said, emphasizing that nearly 26 million people—almost half of Sudan’s population—are facing severe food shortages. The war has turned food into a weapon, with both sides using hunger as a way to control the population, worsening the crisis for already vulnerable communities.
Fletcher spoke directly with refugees in crowded camps, where access to food, clean water, and medical care is incredibly limited. Many are living in conditions that are only getting worse by the day, and humanitarian organizations are struggling to keep up with the overwhelming demand for aid.
The conflict, which erupted earlier this year, has left a trail of destruction in the western and central regions of Sudan. Both government forces and rebel groups are locked in brutal battles, and millions have been displaced as a result. The situation is pushing the country to the brink, and urgent intervention is needed to prevent even greater suffering.

Fletcher’s visit serves as a stark reminder of the immediate need for the international community to step up.
