Two people have been killed and seven others seriously injured after a violent attack on a family in Luhanga, Mbarali District, Mbeya Region.
The incident took place on January 10, when the family arrived at their farmland located in plot number 420, owned by the family patriarch, Mr. Mjengwa, to divide the land for agricultural use.
The family was ambushed by a group of armed individuals who had been using the land without permission. These assailants, armed with traditional weapons, attacked the family members as they began their work on the farm. The attackers reportedly had a longstanding presence on the land, taking advantage of the family’s absence.
Wilbrod Mjengwa, the father of the deceased Iddy Mjengwa, spoke about the tragic loss, explaining that his son was killed after being struck in the head with a hoe and then set on fire along with his motorcycle. Another victim, Maige, died while attempting to assist Iddy. Seven other family members were injured in the attack and are currently receiving treatment at various hospitals, including the Mbeya Referral Hospital.

Local authorities have confirmed the detention of two individuals in connection with the attack. Mbarali Member of Parliament, Hon. Bahati Ndingo, expressed his condolences and stated that law enforcement is investigating the incident. Additionally, Deputy Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Engineer Maryprisca Mahundi, strongly condemned the attack and called for swift and severe action against those involved to set a strong example and deter similar violence in the future.
The attack has shocked the local community, with many calling for justice and accountability. As investigations continue, residents and authorities alike are grappling with the shocking loss of life and the need for stronger protections against land-related violence.
