The ongoing legal proceedings against opposition leader Tundu Lissu have escalated, drawing national and international attention to concerns over judicial fairness and political motivations.

On July 30, 2025, during a session at the Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court, Lissu’s legal team condemned the alleged misconduct of prison officers, who reportedly engaged in excessive and unlawful behavior during his court appearance. This incident has prompted calls from legal professionals and civil society organizations for immediate action to address the alleged violations and ensure the protection of Lissu’s rights

The Tanganyika Law Society (TLS), the national bar association, has expressed deep concern over the manner of Lissu’s arrest and detention, citing violations of constitutional rights and criminal procedural safeguards.

International bodies have also weighed in, with the Commonwealth Lawyers Association (CLA) highlighting concerns over due process in Lissu’s case. The CLA’s statement underscores the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring fair trials, particularly in politically sensitive cases.

The trial, which has been postponed multiple times, is currently in its preliminary stages. Lissu, who is representing himself, has repeatedly called for the charges to be dropped, describing the proceedings as a misuse of the judicial system for political purposes.
