President Félix Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) took part in an online summit focused on peace efforts for his country, which is currently being held in Dar es Salaam.
The president’s representative at the in-person meeting was Prime Minister Judith Suminwa, who attended on his behalf.
The summit, happening on February 8, 2025, is an urgent gathering of leaders from the East African Community (EAC) and the Southern African Development Community (SADC). They are coming together to address the ongoing conflict in DRC, especially in the eastern region, where instability and violence have persisted for years.
Tshisekedi’s participation via video call highlights the growing role of digital diplomacy in addressing urgent matters of international concern, particularly when attending in person isn’t feasible. The DRC has faced numerous challenges from armed groups and political struggles, and the summit aims to find practical solutions to these problems and bring peace to the country.
Prime Minister Suminwa’s presence in Dar es Salaam is crucial, as she will be voicing DRC’s position on the conflict and representing the president’s interests in the talks.

The summit will focus on strengthening regional cooperation, with an emphasis on improving security and stability throughout Central and East Africa.
Discussions will include strategies to increase military collaboration, provide humanitarian aid, and mediate politically to address the underlying causes of the violence in DRC. Leaders will also look for ways to foster deeper ties between the EAC and SADC to prevent further conflicts from spilling over into neighboring nations.
The outcome of the summit is expected to play a key role in shaping the future of DRC’s political environment and its relationship with surrounding countries. As regional leaders work towards ending the violence, their efforts will be closely watched by the international community, hoping that the cooperation of these two regional groups can bring about lasting peace.
