President Donald Trump has indicated that he might forgive entrepreneur Elon Musk after a widely publicized dispute between the two.
The tension arose when Musk openly criticized one of Trump’s signature energy and tax policies, igniting a public back-and-forth that caught significant media attention.
The conflict intensified last week when Trump praised his administration’s Inflation Reduction Act — which he dubbed “Big Beautiful” — aimed at tax reforms and clean energy investments. Musk, who recently stepped down from his government role as head of the Government Efficiency Department, argued that the legislation undermined efforts to cut unnecessary federal expenditures.
Musk accused Trump of a lack of appreciation and even expressed support for calls to remove him from office. At one point, Musk threatened to halt the U.S. space program by blocking planned launches of the SpaceX Dragon spacecraft. Trump fired back, stating that Musk “has lost his way” and blamed him for the cancellation of the government’s electric vehicle EV incentives, which had greatly benefited Musk’s ventures.
The dispute escalated further after Musk posted a now-deleted message linking Trump to the late Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted sex offender, fueling further controversy.
In a recent interview with The New York Post, Trump said he was taken aback by Musk’s conduct but claimed he harbored no lasting resentment. “I was really surprised by what happened,” he remarked. He described the energy bill as “unique” but was disappointed by Musk’s response. “When he did that, I was not happy at all.”
When asked if he might forgive Musk, Trump responded, “I think I can,” adding that his focus now is “putting the country back on track.”

Hours before the interview aired, Musk appeared to soften his stance, posting an apology on his social media platform X (formerly Twitter). He expressed regret over “some of my posts about President @realDonaldTrump last week,” admitting they “went too far.”
Musk did not specify which posts he referred to, but reports from sources like CNN and Reuters indicate that aides from both sides have been in quiet discussions aimed at defusing tensions.
When asked about Musk’s apology in a follow-up interview with The Post, Trump said, “I thought it was a very nice thing that he did.”
This episode highlights the complex relationship between two influential figures, especially amid ongoing debates over energy policies and federal incentives that continue to impact public discourse and government decision-making.
