Trump Diagnosed With Chronic Vein Condition

At 79, he remains a dominant figure in U.S. politics and has hinted at continued ambitions ahead of the 2028 presidential elections.

U.S. President Donald J. Trump, 79, has been diagnosed with chronic venous insufficiency—a long-term vascular condition affecting blood circulation in the legs.

The announcement came from the White House following a week of speculation over photographs showing swelling and discoloration on his hands and feet.

The White House Press Secretary, Karoline Leavitt, confirmed on July 17 that Trump had recently undergone a “comprehensive medical evaluation” after visible symptoms raised public concern. “The President’s condition is stable and manageable,” she stated, adding that the swelling was due to poor venous return in the legs—a common issue among aging adults.

Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) occurs when leg veins struggle to send blood back to the heart, causing it to pool in the lower extremities. This can lead to swelling, heaviness, and skin changes, and in severe cases, venous ulcers.

According to experts at Johns Hopkins Medicine, CVI is not life-threatening but can affect mobility and comfort if untreated. Risk factors include aging, sedentary lifestyle, prolonged standing, obesity, and a family history of vein problems.

Images showing bruises on Trump’s hand had prompted widespread online speculation. According to Leavitt, the marks were “minor tissue damage caused by frequent handshakes,” made more visible because of his routine use of aspirin. Aspirin, a blood thinner commonly used to reduce the risk of heart attack or stroke, can make bruising more likely even from slight pressure.

This revelation sparked public interest, particularly because Trump has often presented himself as exceptionally healthy. In past statements, he described himself as the “healthiest president ever elected,” a claim met with skepticism by some medical observers.

Trump’s diagnosis brings renewed attention to the health of aging politicians. At 79, he remains a dominant figure in U.S. politics and has hinted at continued ambitions ahead of the 2028 presidential elections. Comparisons have also been drawn to Joe Biden, who faced similar scrutiny over his health during his presidency.

Political analysts say the transparency around Trump’s condition may be a strategic move to counter speculation, especially in an era where public figures are under constant media and social media surveillance.

Most people with CVI manage it effectively with conservative treatments. These include:

  • Use of compression stockings to assist circulation
  • Regular exercise to strengthen leg muscles
  • Elevation of legs to reduce swelling
  • Minimizing extended periods of sitting or standing

In more advanced cases, procedures such as endovenous laser treatment or sclerotherapy may be needed to close damaged veins.

So far, the public response has been mixed. Supporters have expressed concern but trust in Trump’s ability to manage the condition, while critics question the long-term impact on his capacity to lead, should he seek office again.

The White House has reassured Americans that the condition does not impair Trump’s ability to carry out his duties or make public appearances. Medical experts echo that message, emphasizing that with proper care and lifestyle adjustments, patients with CVI can maintain a normal, active life.
