U.S. President Donald Trump has sharply criticized France’s decision to prevent Marine Le Pen, the leader of the far-right National Rally party, from running in the upcoming presidential election.
The French judiciary recently sentenced Le Pen to a five-year ban from holding public office after she was convicted of embezzling EU funds. Trump, reflecting on his own experiences with the U.S. legal system, has made clear his disapproval of the French decision, drawing a comparison between Le Pen’s legal troubles and his own.
Le Pen, who is a major opposition figure and one of France’s most well-known politicians, was found guilty of diverting funds that were meant for her parliamentary assistants to finance party operations. The amount involved reportedly totaled around €4.5 million. Le Pen’s conviction carries a four-year prison sentence, though two years were suspended. On top of that, she has been banned from running for office for five years. Le Pen is expected to appeal the ruling.
Trump, known for his outspoken remarks, commented on the ruling, stating that Le Pen’s disqualification from running for office while being one of the leading candidates “sounds like this country.” He pointed to the political nature of her conviction and the way the legal system in both the U.S. and France, in his view, sometimes seems to target political figures.
The ruling has sparked outrage among Le Pen’s supporters, who believe the conviction is a politically motivated effort to silence her. The timing of the decision, so close to France’s presidential election, has only fueled these claims. Italian Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini also expressed solidarity with Le Pen, calling the verdict an attempt to disrupt democracy and prevent the will of the people from being expressed.

On the other hand, critics argue that the legal process in France was fair, pointing out that Le Pen’s actions were a clear violation of the law. However, the case continues to generate fierce debate, particularly over the relationship between politics and the judicial system.
Trump’s comments about the case have added an international dimension to the controversy, as they echo the growing global concerns about political interference in legal matters. His remarks also reflect ongoing political tensions in both Europe and the U.S., where legal battles often intersect with political ambitions.
As the election approaches, the absence of Le Pen from the ballot will undoubtedly shift the dynamics of the race. Her supporters view the ban as an obstacle placed in the way of their candidate, and the continuing international dialogue over the case suggests that the issues surrounding her conviction will remain a topic of heated debate for some time.
