A devastating truck accident in southern Ethiopia has left at least 71 people dead, with many others injured, in what has become one of the country’s deadliest road accidents in recent years.
The crash occurred in the Bona district, located in the Sidama region, when the truck carrying passengers lost control and plunged into a river.
Wosenyeleh Simion, the spokesperson for the Sidama regional government, confirmed that the death toll stands at 71, including 68 men and 3 women. Five people are in critical condition and are being treated at the nearby Bona General Hospital. Initially, the death toll was reported as 60, but it was later updated after a more thorough assessment of the wreckage.
Wosenyeleh explained that the truck missed a bridge while navigating a sharp bend in the road, a stretch known for its dangerous curves. Local traffic police believe the truck was heavily overloaded, which may have played a significant role in the crash.
It has also emerged that many of the victims were attending a wedding, with some families losing multiple members in the tragic incident. The Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporation (EBC) reported that the passengers were returning from the wedding ceremony when the accident occurred on Sunday.
Ethiopia has a long history of road accidents, many of which are attributed to poor driving practices, inadequate vehicle maintenance, and hazardous road conditions.

In 2018, a similar tragedy claimed the lives of 38 people, mostly students, when a bus plunged into a ravine in the country’s mountainous region.
The latest accident highlights the ongoing challenges in improving road safety across the country. The government has yet to announce any immediate plans to address the growing number of fatalities on the roads, but the tragedy underscores the urgent need for better infrastructure and stricter traffic regulations.
The community in Bona is grappling with the loss of so many lives. Families who lost loved ones are now left to mourn, while the entire region struggles to come to terms with the impact of this heart-wrenching event.
