The body of Dr Hashim Titto, a young Tanzanian medical doctor who had been missing for over a month, was discovered along the shoreline of Coco Beach in Dar es Salaam this week, marking a devastating conclusion to a case that had gripped the country’s healthcare community.

Dr Titto was a postgraduate surgical trainee at the Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (MUHAS), where he was enrolled in the Master of Medicine (MMed) in Surgery program. In addition to his academic pursuit, he served as a medical officer at the Mtwara Zonal Referral Hospital, a key healthcare facility in southern Tanzania.

The university confirmed the tragic discovery on Friday, June 6, through Hellen Mtui, head of the Public Relations and Communication Unit at MUHAS.
“This incident is true. Dr Hashim was an MMed student at MUHAS,” said Mtui. “I have received the sad news today. I will share more information as it becomes available.”

Dr Titto had been reported missing since April 24, 2025. His disappearance prompted widespread concern, especially among his fellow students, colleagues, and the broader Tanzanian medical community. The Tanzania Police Force has launched an investigation to determine the circumstances surrounding his death. As of now, the cause of death remains unknown.

Dr Titto was widely regarded as a passionate and dedicated healthcare professional. Colleagues describe him as humble, brilliant, and deeply committed to improving surgical outcomes for patients in Tanzania’s public health sector. His contributions at Mtwara Hospital had already left an impact, even as he continued his training at one of Tanzania’s leading health sciences institutions.

The Tanzania Medical Association is expected to release a formal statement in the coming days, but tributes have already begun pouring in across social media platforms, from doctors, students, and patients who knew him. Many expressed shock and sorrow over his sudden and tragic passing.

This incident has also reignited conversation around the pressures faced by young medical professionals in the country — from long shifts in under-resourced hospitals to the emotional burden of clinical training. Dr Titto’s death has reminded many of the human stories behind the white coats.
