A tragedy has unfolded in Dar es Salaam after Amani Simbayao, an officer with the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA), passed away on December 6, 2024, at Muhimbili National Hospital. Simbayao had been fighting for his life following a violent attack by residents in the Tegeta area.
The incident occurred on the evening of December 5, when Simbayao and two colleagues were conducting an operation to confiscate a vehicle suspected of being smuggled. Residents reportedly mistook the officers for kidnappers and turned against them, leaving the team severely injured.
TRA confirmed Simbayao’s death in a heartfelt statement, expressing sorrow and calling for justice.

“We mourn the loss of one of our own and urge authorities to bring those responsible to justice,” the statement read.
The attack has drawn widespread concern, with many questioning how such a misunderstanding could escalate to such a violent outcome. Dar es Salaam Special Zone Police Commander Jumanne Muliro issued a stern warning against vigilante actions, urging the public to cooperate with law enforcement rather than taking matters into their own hands.
