A correctional officer in Bexar County, Texas, United States, Karla Beltran, has been fired after photographs showing her posing with inmates circulated on social media, raising questions about professional conduct and security rules inside detention facilities.

The Bexar County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Beltran was dismissed on Monday, October 12, 2026, just over three months after she began working on July 1, 2026.

The photographs reportedly show Beltran sitting in front of a window overlooking an inmate area, while several inmates appear to be taking pictures from the other side of the glass. The images quickly attracted attention online, prompting scrutiny of her conduct while on duty.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Beltran was still serving a one-year probationary period, during which newly hired correctional officers and trainees are assessed against workplace performance and professional conduct standards. Employees who fail to meet the requirements can be dismissed without the right to appeal under the applicable probationary rules.

Correctional facilities generally enforce strict rules governing staff interactions with inmates, photography and the use of mobile phones. Such measures are intended to protect the security of detention centres, preserve professional boundaries and prevent the unauthorised sharing of images or information involving inmates.

Photographs taken inside secure facilities can also raise concerns about privacy, institutional discipline and the possible disclosure of restricted areas or procedures. However, the circulation of images on social media does not, by itself, establish whether any specific security breach occurred.

The case highlights the importance of probationary assessments in correctional services, where employees are expected to demonstrate sound judgement, maintain professional boundaries and comply with institutional policies from the beginning of their employment.

The Sheriff’s Office confirmed Beltran’s dismissal, although the information provided did not establish whether the photographs violated a particular written policy or whether any separate investigation or disciplinary action involving the inmates had been announced.

The incident also illustrates how social media can bring the conduct of public employees under rapid scrutiny, particularly when images appear to show activities taking place inside sensitive government facilities.
