Deputy Minister for Energy, Judith Kapinga, announced on October 29, 2024, that all 76 villages in Newala Rural Constituency, Mtwara Region, are now connected to electricity within a one-kilometer reach.
Speaking in Parliament, Minister Kapinga responded to a question by Newala Rural MP, Maimuna Mtanda, regarding the government’s timeline for extending power lines to cover an additional two kilometers in villages under the second phase of the Rural Energy Agency (REA) project.
“REA, through the contractor Central Electrical International Limited, is progressing well, already reaching 32 of the 76 villages targeted in this project. The remaining villages will soon be connected,” Kapinga assured.
In response to a question from Kilombero MP, Abubakar Asenga, about electrifying settlements in Ifakara, including Upendo, Tupendane, Ikwambi, and Misheni, Kapinga confirmed that these villages are part of the ongoing phase for connecting local hamlets. She stated that the government aims to ensure nationwide electricity access, adding that there is an active project to connect 15 villages per constituency, with another project soon to begin.

Addressing Mbarali MP Kenneth Ndingo’s question about when the villages of Igula A, Igula B, and Mngolongolo will receive electricity, Kapinga noted that these villages have been surveyed and are included in the 15-village connection initiative.
Minister Kapinga reiterated the government’s commitment to bring electricity to all rural areas, emphasizing that no village would be left out.
