Dr. Nchemba stated. “We urge citizens to do so responsibly, staying at home when possible, and to prioritize safety in all circumstances.”
December 8, 2025

Tanzania’s Prime Minister, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, has called on citizens to observe Independence Day celebrations at home on December 9, 2025, unless their work or activities require them to be elsewhere.

His statement comes amid heightened security concerns and in the context of the nation’s ongoing commemoration of its historic liberation.

Dr. Nchemba delivered the message while presenting a formal communiqué from President Samia Suluhu Hassan regarding the official arrangements for the national holiday. The Prime Minister emphasized that while Tanzanians are encouraged to participate in festivities, safety and adherence to legal and health guidelines should remain a priority.

“This year’s Independence Day is an opportunity to celebrate our nation’s journey, reflect on our achievements, and honor the sacrifices of those who fought for our freedom,” Dr. Nchemba stated. “We urge citizens to do so responsibly, staying at home when possible, and to prioritize safety in all circumstances.”

The day marks the anniversary of Tanganyika’s independence from British colonial rule on December 9, 1961. The historical milestone paved the way for the formation of modern Tanzania following the union of Tanganyika and Zanzibar in 1964.

Preparations for the holiday across the country are underway, with public institutions and state organs coordinating virtual and limited in-person celebrations. Security agencies have reassured the public that law enforcement officers will be deployed to maintain order and support peaceful observance of the national holiday.

Cultural experts note that Independence Day in Tanzania is not only a historical commemoration but also an expression of national identity, unity, and civic responsibility. Traditional ceremonies, speeches, and patriotic performances are central to the celebrations, highlighting the nation’s rich cultural heritage and progress over more than six decades of sovereignty.

The Prime Minister also encouraged citizens to use the occasion to engage in educational activities with their families, fostering awareness about the country’s journey to independence, the values of civic duty, and the importance of social cohesion.

Authorities reiterated that while public gatherings are subject to legal and security considerations, the spirit of the day can still be upheld through home-based celebrations, virtual events, and small-scale family activities. This approach ensures that the nation honors its history while safeguarding the well-being of all Tanzanians
