Tanzania Reassures Public Over TAZARA Upgrade Benefits

Transport and economic experts note that revitalising TAZARA could lower transport costs, facilitate smoother trade between Tanzania and Zambia, and create jobs across multiple sectors.

The Tanzanian government has moved to reassure citizens about the recently signed agreement to revitalise the Tanzania–Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA), stressing that the project is set to bring significant economic and social benefits to the country.

Government Chief Secretary and Spokesperson Gerson Msigwa explained that the initiative aims to improve the efficiency of one of East Africa’s most vital rail corridors, enhancing freight and passenger services while stimulating economic activity along the railway line.

“TAZARA was built between 1970 and 1975 with an interest-free loan from China and officially handed over in 1976. Despite its importance, the railway has faced operational challenges that reduced efficiency, forcing the government to continue funding its operations,” Msigwa said.

He emphasised that the current revitalisation programme, in partnership with China, will modernise infrastructure, boost service delivery, and strengthen TAZARA’s financial sustainability. “We are confident that these upgrades will restore TAZARA to its central role in supporting national economic growth and generating revenue,” he added.

TAZARA, which links Dar es Salaam Port to Zambia’s copper belt, has historically been a key trade route for minerals, agricultural produce, and other goods. However, aging infrastructure and operational inefficiencies in recent decades have limited its full potential.

The government’s plans include comprehensive rehabilitation of tracks, bridges, stations, and signalling systems, alongside modern rolling stock to ensure reliable passenger and cargo transport. Officials say these improvements will increase safety, attract greater investment, and expand regional trade opportunities.

Transport and economic experts note that revitalising TAZARA could lower transport costs, facilitate smoother trade between Tanzania and Zambia, and create jobs across multiple sectors. Passengers are also expected to benefit from shorter travel times, better comfort, and more predictable schedules.

Msigwa highlighted that the upgrade aligns with broader national objectives to strengthen transport infrastructure and enhance the country’s competitiveness. By combining international partnership with local benefits, the government aims to turn TAZARA into a model of efficient, sustainable, and profitable regional rail transport.

As the mobilisation of equipment, technical teams, and resources continues, authorities have assured the public that progress will be closely monitored to maximise the project’s impact. Citizens are encouraged to view the programme as a long-term investment in economic development and regional integration.

The TAZARA revitalisation is thus seen as a pivotal step in restoring one of Africa’s most historic railways, improving trade efficiency, stimulating economic growth, and reinforcing the ties between Tanzania and Zambia.
