Tanzania’s Prime Minister, Dr. Mwigulu Nchemba, has assured the nation that the government is ready to respond to growing calls for unity, truth, and meaningful dialogue as political leaders and religious figures push for national reconciliation.

The message was delivered during the burial ceremony of veteran economist and statesman Edwin Mtei in Tengeru, Arusha, where hundreds of mourners gathered to honor one of the country’s most respected political pioneers.

Dr. Nchemba told the gathering that all views expressed by leaders during the ceremony had been received by the government and that there is strong political commitment to ensure the country moves forward in harmony. He stressed that the state would not become an obstacle to efforts aimed at healing divisions and strengthening national unity.

Former opposition leader Freeman Mbowe used the solemn moment to urge authorities to confront past political mistakes and release individuals he described as political detainees, saying reconciliation would remain impossible while many citizens continue to suffer behind bars.

According to Mbowe, economic development alone cannot bring lasting stability if fundamental freedoms are ignored. He argued that Tanzanians are still carrying emotional wounds caused by political tensions and called on leaders to rebuild trust through justice and openness.

Leaders from the opposition party CHADEMA praised Mtei as a man of rare integrity who consistently stood by his principles, even when doing so meant sacrificing powerful positions.

Deputy party chairperson John Heche recalled how Mtei once stepped down from a senior government role after disagreeing with the administration’s direction, describing the move as a powerful example of ethical leadership rarely seen in modern politics.

Several speakers highlighted Mtei’s historic role in helping establish multiparty democracy, noting that his courage opened political space for future generations. Lawmaker Joshua Nassari said many of today’s leaders owe their political careers to Mtei’s decision to challenge one-party dominance.

Former ACT-Wazalendo leader Zitto Kabwe urged politicians to honor Mtei’s legacy by embracing accountability and defending democratic values, saying the late statesman’s life remains a lesson in courage and moral responsibility.

Veteran journalist Jenerali Ulimwengu remembered Mtei as a leader who rejected empty promises, insisting that true leadership meant matching words with action. He said Mtei believed honesty and public trust were the foundation of good governance.

The ceremony drew leaders from across the political spectrum, civil society groups, and ordinary citizens, reflecting the deep respect Mtei earned throughout his life.

As Tanzania continues to navigate its democratic journey within the broader political system of Tanzania, many now see Mtei’s passing as a moment to reflect on the country’s future — and an opportunity to turn renewed calls for dialogue into lasting national healing.
