Tanzania has taken a significant step toward strengthening its energy infrastructure by initiating trial operations at a new gas-fired power plant in Mtwara, with a capacity of 20 megawatts.
The facility is expected to enhance electricity supply across the southern regions, particularly in Mtwara and Lindi. Once fully operational, this addition will raise the total power output in the region to approximately 70 megawatts, offering more reliable electricity for both residential and industrial consumers.
The Mtwara plant, initially commissioned in 2007, currently generates 18 megawatts. The new expansion is part of a broader strategy to meet rising energy demands and support the growth of local industries, including agriculture, manufacturing, and tourism. By tapping into domestic natural gas reserves, Tanzania aims to reduce dependence on imported fuels and strengthen energy security, while also contributing to national economic development.

The natural gas fueling these plants comes from the Mnazi Bay Gas Field, operational since 2016. Recent initiatives by national energy authorities have focused on increasing output from this field to sustain growing power demands. With proper management, these resources will provide a stable energy supply for the southern regions and help avoid power shortages, which have historically constrained local development projects.
Energy experts emphasize that the Mtwara gas plant represents more than just increased electricity generation. It is a strategic investment in regional growth, with potential to attract new businesses, create jobs, and improve living standards for communities in the area. Reliable electricity is also expected to support essential services, including hospitals, schools, and small businesses, further contributing to the socio-economic development of Mtwara and Lindi.
Tanzania’s government has consistently highlighted the importance of utilizing domestic energy resources to fuel industrial growth and modernize the national power grid. The successful integration of the Mtwara gas plant into the regional network will demonstrate the country’s commitment to sustainable energy development and reinforce confidence in the energy sector.
With careful planning and investment, the plant could become a model for similar initiatives across Tanzania, ensuring that communities benefit from modern, reliable, and sustainable electricity.
