Tanzania will soon join a select group of countries whose citizens are required to post a visa bond when applying to enter the United States.

Beginning October 23, 2025, Tanzanian nationals seeking B-1 (business) and B-2 (tourism) visas will need to provide a refundable bond ranging from $5,000 to $15,000 — approximately 12 to 37 million Tanzanian shillings.

The move places Tanzania among seven African nations included in this pilot program, which the U.S. Department of State says is intended to reduce visa overstays by travelers from countries with higher rates of noncompliance. According to the department, the bond is fully refundable if the visa holder complies with all visa conditions and departs the United States on time.

In response, the Government of Tanzania has initiated diplomatic discussions with U.S. officials to examine how the new requirement will affect travel and business relations.

Tanzanians planning to travel to the United States are encouraged to stay updated through official channels and carefully follow guidance on visa applications and requirements. , both governments are working to find a balanced approach that addresses U.S. concerns while minimizing hardship for Tanzanian citizens.
