The country is mourning the sudden and tragic loss of Engineer Gissima Nyamo-Hanga, the Managing Director of Tanzania’s national power utility, and his driver, Muhajiri Haule, following a fatal car crash that occurred on the night of Saturday, April 12, in Bunda District, Mara Region.
The two were traveling along the busy Mwanza–Musoma highway when their vehicle was involved in a serious accident. According to preliminary reports, the crash occurred late at night, and both men died at the scene. The cause of the accident is still under investigation by local authorities, who have since launched a detailed probe to determine exactly what happened.
Eyewitnesses who arrived shortly after the crash described a horrifying scene, with the vehicle badly mangled and emergency responders working into the early hours to retrieve the bodies. Images shared from the scene show the extensive damage caused by the impact.
Engineer Nyamo-Hanga was known across the country for his visionary leadership in the energy sector. Under his stewardship, Tanzania had been working to strengthen its electricity supply network and expand energy access to underserved regions. Just days before the crash, he had been touring the northern regions to inspect ongoing infrastructure projects aimed at improving power reliability.
Colleagues and citizens alike have been left shocked and heartbroken. “He was more than a leader—he was a man of the people,” said one colleague who had worked with him on several national electrification initiatives. “This is a massive loss not only to our energy sector but to the entire country.”
