Tanzania has made history by becoming the first country in East and Central Africa to establish a modern aircraft assembly plant.
Located in Morogoro, the facility has already assembled four planes, including the Skyleader 400 and Skyleader 600 models, and is set to play a significant role in the region’s aviation industry.
The assembly plant, which focuses on producing aircraft for diverse purposes such as passenger transport, agricultural irrigation, and research, marks a step forward in technological advancement for Tanzania. Speaking during a recent visit by officials from the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), the plant’s Director, Eng. David Grolig, shared his vision for the operation and its potential impact.
“Our priority is to provide high-quality services by utilizing advanced technology in aircraft assembly,” Eng. Grolig explained. He acknowledged the challenges in sourcing aircraft parts but emphasized the company’s commitment to overcoming these hurdles.
Despite being based in Tanzania, the company aims for a broader reach. “We’re not focused on investing in individual countries; instead, our strategy is to establish regional offices across Africa,” Eng. Grolig said. “Our initial focus is on East Africa, with plans to expand across the continent. The plant here in Tanzania is part of our broader effort to bring our services closer to African markets.”
Eng. Grolig also highlighted that the facility is an assembly plant, not a manufacturing hub for aircraft parts. “Only China and Russia currently produce parts that meet international standards,” he explained, adding that the company sources components globally to ensure quality and compliance.
The plant’s establishment has not only brought technological advancements but also provided valuable opportunities for local talent. Aircraft Quality Assurance Engineer Ms. Lilian Jackson revealed that six Tanzanians have already received training in the Czech Republic, equipping them with the skills needed for aircraft assembly. “This is a great step forward for Tanzanian professionals entering the aviation industry,” Ms. Jackson said.

The Skyleader 600, one of the models assembled at the Morogoro facility, is a versatile, two-seat ultralight aircraft known for its affordability and low maintenance costs. Designed for purposes ranging from recreational flying to pilot training, the aircraft has already gained recognition as a reliable and efficient model for various markets.
The plant’s establishment has also brought significant economic benefits to the region, creating jobs and fostering industrial growth. The partnership between Tanzanian and Czech professionals has further enriched the local workforce, blending international expertise with local talent.
As the plant continues operations, there is optimism about its future role in advancing Tanzania’s aviation industry. Eng. Grolig expressed confidence that the facility would not only contribute to Tanzania’s economy but also enhance the country’s reputation as a technological leader in Africa.
With plans to establish regional offices and expand its footprint across the continent, the company’s presence in Tanzania is expected to catalyze the growth of Africa’s aviation sector, opening doors for increased connectivity, economic development, and innovation..
