Sudan is on track to establish a new government after the military regained full control of the capital, Khartoum.
This decision follows months of conflict, with the country enduring political instability since 2023.
General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan, the leader of Sudan’s Armed Forces (SAF), made the announcement during a meeting with pro-military politicians in Port Sudan on Saturday. According to Burhan, the new government will serve as a transitional one, helping the country reach its military goals. He described it as a “wartime government” designed to restore order and stability in the country.
“We can call it a transitional government, or a wartime government, but this will be a government that helps us achieve our military objectives, which are to free Sudan from these rebels,” said Burhan.
Burhan also revealed that Sudan’s transitional constitution will be revised, and a prime minister will be appointed to lead the government, without external interference. This move comes after nearly two years of intense power struggles between Burhan and his rival, Mohammad Hamdan Daglo, also known as Hemedti.

Hemedti leads the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), and tensions between the SAF and RSF have caused ongoing conflict in Sudan.
The violence between the two factions erupted in April 2023 after months of disagreements about a plan to return Sudan to civilian rule. Since then, the country has been in turmoil, with both sides vying for control over the country’s political and military landscape.
The military’s decision to form a new government reflects its efforts to solidify power, though it raises questions about Sudan’s path to civilian rule. With a prime minister set to take charge, the country will need to navigate the challenges of rebuilding and healing from the ongoing conflict.
