A 24-year-old Spanish woman, Noelia, is at the center of a historic court case as she seeks the legal right to end her life through euthanasia, a decision that has been strongly opposed by her father.
Noelia’s battle began after she survived a suicide attempt in 2022, which left her paraplegic and in constant, unbearable pain. With no hope for recovery, she decided to pursue euthanasia, a right legalized in Spain in 2021 for individuals suffering from severe, irreversible conditions. In July 2024, the Catalonia Euthanasia and Evaluation Board approved her request, acknowledging that her suffering met the legal criteria for assisted death.
However, just days before her scheduled euthanasia procedure in August 2024, Noelia’s father filed a legal challenge to stop it. His appeal, backed by a religious legal group, temporarily blocked the process, forcing Noelia to take her fight to court.
During a recent hearing in Barcelona, Noelia stood firm in her decision, telling the judge, “I want to end this with dignity once and for all.” She also revealed that she has faced pressure from religious groups trying to dissuade her. Medical experts supporting her case testified that she is mentally competent to make this decision and that her suffering is both unbearable and irreversible, meeting Spain’s euthanasia requirements.

Her father, however, argues that she has shown signs of improvement and insists that she is not in the right mental state to make such a choice. He believes that as her parent, he has a duty to protect her and that the state should prevent vulnerable individuals from making irreversible decisions in moments of distress.
This case is unprecedented in Spain, as it marks the first time a euthanasia request has been challenged in court. The judge is expected to deliver a ruling soon, and the outcome could have far-reaching consequences for future euthanasia cases in the country.
