Tanzania has joined other nations in commemorating the International Day for Disaster Reduction, observed annually on October 13, to continue addressing and mitigating the impact of disasters in the country.
During a statement at CCM Kirumba Stadium on October 13, 2024, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa highlighted that disasters cause various damages, including loss of life, permanent disability, destruction of property, infrastructure, and the environment. Children and youth are especially vulnerable, facing disrupted education, malnutrition, health issues, and threats to their safety and security.
Majaliwa explained that this day was established by United Nations Resolution 64/200, passed on December 21, 2009. It is celebrated annually to unite efforts in protecting children and youth from the effects of disasters. Various strategies have been put in place, including disaster prevention training, education on weather patterns, climate change adaptation, continued research on disaster impacts, and public awareness campaigns to enhance understanding.
Referring to government reports and Disaster Management Committees regarding the outlook for the short rains (Vuli) from October to December 2024, Majaliwa shared that forecasts by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) indicate that many areas will experience insufficient rainfall. In response, measures have been set to prevent, minimize, and manage the effects while restoring normalcy.
Majaliwa outlined six key steps to mitigate these challenges, urging relevant authorities to continue promoting the use of short-maturing seeds, storing food and livestock fodder, and providing education on water-efficient farming techniques. Additionally, he called on public institutions, including schools, healthcare facilities, and offices, to set an example by installing systems to harvest, store, and use rainwater.
Lastly, Majaliwa emphasized strengthening strategies to prevent outbreaks of diseases that may arise due to a shortage of clean and safe water.
