Samia Suluhu Hassan has called on Tanzanian journalists to wield their pens responsibly, emphasizing that the media plays a crucial role in protecting the nation’s image — much like soldiers guard its borders.

Speaking during the Samia Kalamu Awards ceremony held at The Super Dome in Masaki, Dar es Salaam, on Monday evening, the President of Tanzania urged members of the press to counter misinformation and uphold national dignity through accurate and fair reporting.

“Our pens must protect our country, just as our soldiers protect our borders,” President Samia said. “We shouldn’t dismiss the criticisms we face abroad. Many stem from misinformation — and it’s up to us to clarify the facts.”

She further highlighted that journalism is not merely a political instrument, but a powerful force that can unite or divide. Samia encouraged journalists to act with patriotism, reminding them of their duty to foster understanding and cohesion.

The remarks come amid renewed global attention on Tanzania’s political landscape and human rights record. The President appealed to media professionals to shape the narrative through truth-based, responsible journalism that reflects the country’s realities.

The Samia Kalamu Awards (named after the president herself), were established to recognize excellence in Tanzanian journalism, especially reporting that supports good governance, national unity, and sustainable development. This year’s awards honored journalists from various media outlets who stood out in investigative journalism, feature writing, and community reporting.

In her closing remarks, President Samia reminded the media that their work goes beyond information — it shapes the nation.

“There is a Tanzania after every headline,” she concluded. “And it’s up to all of us — especially you, the storytellers — to ensure the story brings us together, not apart.”
