Kenyan President William Ruto recently re-appointed several cabinet members he had dismissed last week, establishing a new government aimed at addressing the concerns of young protesters.

In a televised announcement, Ruto revealed 11 appointments to a unity government, promising additional nominations soon. This reorganization follows a mass firing, a response to youth-led protests which had already forced Ruto to retract $2.7 billion in proposed tax hikes

Among the reappointed were Kithure Kindiki as Interior Minister, Aden Duale as Defence Minister, and Soipan Tuya as Environment Minister. Ruto also reassigned several ministerial portfolios and expanded the mandate of the Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary, now including the Ministry of Foreign and Diaspora Affairs

The protests, which have led to over 50 deaths since mid-June, placed Ruto under immense pressure from both lenders to reduce the nation’s high debts and the public grappling with rising living costs

To address these issues, Ruto retained six of his 22 Cabinet Secretaries and named five new nominees in the first batch of 11 ministers. The complete list of nominees is as follows:

– Prof. Kithure Kindiki – Interior and National Administration
– Dr. Debra Mulonga Barasa – Health
– Alice Wahome – Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development
– Julius Migosi Ogamba – Education
– Aden Barre Duale – Defence
– Dr. Andrew Mwihia Karanja – Agriculture and Livestock Development
– Roselinda Soipan Tuya – Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry
– Eric Muriithi Muuga – Water, Sanitation, and Irrigation
– Davis Chirchir – Roads and Transport
– Margaret Nyambura Ndung’u – Information, Communication, and Digital Economy
– Rebecca Miano – Attorney-General

Additionally, the Ministry of Public Service, Gender, and Affirmative Action has been renamed the Ministry of Public Service, Performance and Delivery Management, and several other ministries and state departments have been restructured to better align with Ruto’s vision
