U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio has called for Russia and Ukraine to resume direct peace negotiations, saying renewed dialogue is essential to narrowing the gap between the two sides’ “red lines” and creating a path toward a negotiated settlement.
Speaking on the ongoing conflict, Rubio stressed that diplomacy remains the most effective way to end the war, despite the significant differences that continue to separate Moscow and Kyiv. He argued that restarting talks would help both parties better understand each other’s positions and identify areas where compromise may be possible.
Rubio acknowledged that the two sides remain far apart on key issues, but said negotiations are necessary to gradually bring their positions closer rather than allowing the conflict to remain at a standstill.

His remarks come as international efforts to revive peace talks have intensified amid continued fighting and growing concerns over the humanitarian and economic impact of the war. While previous rounds of negotiations failed to produce a lasting agreement, several countries have continued to push for renewed diplomatic engagement.
Russia and Ukraine have maintained firm positions on major issues, including territorial control, security guarantees, and ceasefire conditions, making any breakthrough difficult. However, Rubio suggested that sustained dialogue is the only realistic avenue for reducing tensions and working toward a long-term resolution.
The United States has repeatedly stated that any peace agreement must be acceptable to Ukraine while continuing to support diplomatic initiatives aimed at ending the conflict. Rubio’s comments reflect Washington’s view that keeping communication channels open remains critical, even when immediate progress appears unlikely.
