It has been reported that the Rural Energy Agency (REA) has supplied electricity to about 2,400 residents in eight villages within Lupembe Division, Njombe District, in Njombe Region, following support to Matembwe Village Company Ltd, which has generated 550 kilowatts of power.

This was revealed on October 30, 2024, by the Director of Alternative and Renewable Energy at REA, Ms. Advera Mwijage, during a visit to the Matembwe Village Ltd project, co-owned by Njombe District Council and the residents of the villages of Matembwe, Iyembela, and Ikondo in Njombe Region.

She stated that the developer has provided services in eight villages, connecting a total of 2,400 customers, of which about 750 were connected through government assistance via REA.

“The cost incurred to connect these customers is approximately one billion shillings, and REA continues to support further connections to ensure a reliable electricity supply,” said Ms. Advera.

She added that REA has now reached all villages nationwide, although there are still some neighborhoods and households that require electricity services.

“The project has now been operating for over 30 years and continues to provide quality service by increasing the number of customers connected to electricity,” emphasized Ms. Advera.

Additionally, REA continues to support the project by providing funds to enable surrounding communities to access electricity and boost economic activities.

On the other hand, Ms. Advera mentioned that more than 80 billion shillings have been invested to implement various REA projects in the region, ensuring that all rural areas have access to electricity.

Meanwhile, the Managing Director of Matembwe Village Company Ltd, Johannes Kamonga, stated that the company is involved in power generation, transmission, and distribution.

He added that, through this project, they are currently generating 550 kilowatts of electricity with three machines, with one producing 80 kilowatts, another 120 kilowatts, and the third 350 kilowatts.
