Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended an olive branch to the United States, expressing his willingness to engage in dialogue with President Donald Trump’s administration to address the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Speaking during a meeting with Russia’s Security Council, Putin emphasized the need for a sustainable resolution to the crisis, urging all parties to work toward a “long-term peace.”
“Any pause in the fighting should not be an opportunity for regrouping forces but a genuine effort toward lasting peace,” Putin stated, underscoring his concerns about temporary ceasefires potentially exacerbating the conflict.
The remarks come as the international community closely monitors the evolving relationship between the United States and Russia under President Trump’s leadership. The Kremlin has signaled cautious optimism about the possibility of improving ties after years of heightened tensions between the two nuclear powers.
In addition to addressing the situation in Ukraine, Putin highlighted broader issues of global security, including nuclear arms control. He expressed Russia’s commitment to maintaining the New START treaty, a key arms control agreement set to expire in 2026, which limits the nuclear arsenals of both nations.
“We must ensure strategic stability and prevent an arms race,” Putin said, signaling his administration’s readiness to engage in meaningful discussions with Washington on this critical issue.

President Trump’s administration has also expressed interest in restoring direct communication channels with Russia. The White House has described its approach as one aimed at avoiding unnecessary escalations while exploring opportunities for cooperation on shared global challenges.
While Putin’s remarks highlight his openness to dialogue, Russian officials remain measured in their expectations. Moscow understands the complexity of bridging the deep divides between the two nations, particularly on issues like NATO expansion and sanctions.
Meanwhile, Putin has also been strengthening ties with other global players. In a recent call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, he reaffirmed the strong partnership between Russia and China, emphasizing their shared vision for a “more balanced and multipolar global order.” This diplomatic coordination underscores Russia’s strategy of diversifying its alliances while keeping the door open for dialogue with the United States.
