President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, formally welcomed a newborn girl into her care on March 11, 2026, at her official residence in Chamwino, Dodoma. The infant, named Grace Samia Suluhu Hassan, was found abandoned in Nzega Town, Tabora Region, and handed over to the President by Nzega District Commissioner, Naitapwaki Tukai.

District Commissioner Tukai explained that the baby had been discovered on January 17, 2026, near the Kasulu Guest House area in Nzega Town. Upon receiving the report, local authorities collaborated with the Tanzania Police Force to ensure the child was safely transported to a hospital for thorough examination and care. Efforts to trace her mother have so far been unsuccessful.

Speaking during the handover ceremony, President Dr. Samia expressed her commitment to providing Grace with a nurturing environment, ensuring access to protection, education, healthcare, and all essential services for a secure and loving upbringing. “Those who abandon children may not understand the consequences of their actions. It is far better to place a child in the care of legal authorities or official childcare centers than to leave them to face danger alone,” she said.

The President further emphasized that every child is a treasure with potential that is yet to unfold, urging Tanzanians to treat abandoned children with compassion. “Every child born represents hope for the future. We cannot know what tomorrow holds, but we must ensure their safety and opportunity for growth,” she said.

Social workers and child protection advocates in Tanzania welcomed the President’s intervention, noting that the situation highlights broader concerns about child welfare and public awareness of legal alternatives for unwanted or abandoned children. By stepping forward, the President has set a precedent for prioritizing child protection at the highest level of government.

Grace’s arrival at State House Chamwino has been met with nationwide attention, reflecting public admiration for the President’s personal involvement in ensuring her welfare. Authorities continue to work on tracing the mother while providing Grace with a safe and structured environment within the framework of Tanzania’s child protection laws.

This event also brings attention to the ongoing need for robust community programs to prevent child abandonment and promote responsible parenting. Experts have pointed out that integrating awareness campaigns with social services and community engagement can significantly reduce instances of abandonment and improve outcomes for vulnerable children.

Grace Samia Suluhu Hassan now begins her new life under the care of the President, symbolizing a message of hope and responsibility for all Tanzanians. Her story has already sparked discussions on child rights, governmental responsibility, and the vital role of public leadership in safeguarding society’s most vulnerable members, in line with international standards such as those outlined by UNICEF.
