The President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, has extended heartfelt condolences following the passing of Polycarp Pengo, the retired Archbishop of Dar es Salaam, who died on February 19, 2026, while receiving treatment at the Jakaya Kikwete Cardiac Institute (JKCI).
In a statement shared on social media, President Samia highlighted Cardinal Pengo’s lifelong dedication to promoting peace, moral integrity, and national unity. “I received with deep sorrow the news of the passing of His Eminence Polycarp Cardinal Pengo, retired Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Dar es Salaam. Throughout his service, Cardinal Pengo stood firmly in preaching peace, ethical values, and national cohesion. He was a voice of wisdom in social and moral matters, encouraging respect, dignity, and unity in our society. His contributions to spiritual formation and societal development will always be remembered and honored,” the President’s message read.
President Samia also extended her sympathies to the leadership of the Tanzania Episcopal Conference, including its President, Bishop Wolfgang Pisa, as well as to the bishops, priests, religious orders, families, friends, and all Catholic faithful across the country.

Cardinal Pengo, born in Mwazye village, Rukwa Region, served the Catholic Church for over fifty years, leaving a legacy as both a spiritual leader and a guiding voice in Tanzanian society. He was known for his unwavering commitment to moral leadership, interfaith dialogue, and community service, continuing to influence public discourse even after retiring.
The announcement of his passing has sparked nationwide mourning, as citizens, religious communities, and public leaders pay tribute to a figure who shaped both faith and civic life in Tanzania. Funeral arrangements are being coordinated by Church authorities, with further details expected to be released in the coming days.
