President Samia Suluhu Hassan has recommended that a secondary school in Bumbwini Misufini, Unguja, be named after the late Vice President of Zanzibar, Ambassador Seif Ali Iddi, in recognition of his immense contributions to the country.
This suggestion was made by President Samia during the opening of the school on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, in Bumbwini. Upon arriving at the school, she noticed that the front of the building was not labeled and immediately saw an opportunity for a fitting tribute.
“As I walked around, I noticed that the school didn’t have a name on the front. I joked with myself that maybe they were going to surprise me by naming it after me, but I would have refused that. This is a place that deserves to be named after someone who has done so much for our country,” she said.
The President then expressed her concern about the lack of public recognition for Ambassador Seif, noting that although he had given a great deal to the nation, his name had not been honored in the form of public institutions such as schools, hospitals, or even community spaces.
“Until today, I’ve seen no place named after Balozi Seif. No hospital, no school, no park. This is why I’m proposing that we name this school in his honor. He has given so much to Zanzibar and to the country as a whole, and it’s time we celebrate his legacy,” President Samia emphasized.
