President Samia, Egyptian President Fattah to launch Nyerere Dam

In a momentous event set to take place in March 2024, President Samia Suluhu Hassan  and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi will come together to inaugurate the highly anticipated Nyerere Dam.

The grand inauguration ceremony accoirding to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy, Doto Biteko, who announced this, said the event  is scheduled to be held at the prestigious Julius Nyerere International Conference Center, marking a significant milestone in the collaboration between the two nations.

The Nyerere Dam, a symbol of cooperation and progress between Tanzania and Egypt, is a monumental project aimed at enhancing water resource management and promoting sustainable development in the region. Named after Tanzania’s founding father, Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, the dam is poised to play a crucial role in bolstering water security and facilitating irrigation projects in the area.

The joint initiative between Tanzania and Egypt underscores the commitment of both nations to harnessing their resources for the collective benefit of their people. The upcoming inauguration ceremony is expected to be attended by dignitaries, officials, and stakeholders from both countries, as well as representatives from international organizations keen on witnessing this historic moment.

The project, whose construction started in 2019, is being built at $2.9 billion (Sh6.6 trillion) by a consortium of Egyptian firms, Arab Contractors, and El-Sewedy Electric.Yesterday, an initial 235 megawatts was supplied to the national grid after the activation of turbine 8.

As preparations are underway for the momentous event, anticipation is running high for the official launch of the Nyerere Dam. The inauguration at the Julius Nyerere International Conference Center promises to be a testament to the enduring friendship and cooperation between Tanzania and Egypt, setting the stage for a new chapter of collaboration and progress in the region.
