The Port of Dar es Salaam is steadily cementing its position as a major cargo hub for East and Central Africa, following a series of transformative upgrades that have modernized its infrastructure.
Recent improvements now allow the port to accommodate mega ships measuring up to 300 meters in length, bringing it on par with some of the world’s most advanced ports. This milestone demonstrates not only the port’s increased capacity but also its readiness to handle larger vessels efficiently.
The upgrades are part of the Dar es Salaam Maritime Gateway Project (DSMGP), a multi-year initiative launched in 2017 to enhance Tanzania’s maritime infrastructure. Under the leadership of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, the government has prioritized this project, recognizing its strategic role in supporting regional trade and economic growth.
A recent highlight was the handling of the MV MYNY, a Post-Panamax vessel carrying 6,840 containers with a gross tonnage of 75,201. Captain Abdullah Mwingamno, Director of Marine and Port Operations at the Tanzania Ports Authority, noted that managing such large vessels demonstrates the port’s upgraded capabilities and operational efficiency.

In addition to physical infrastructure, the port has adopted modern technology to streamline operations. The introduction of a Port Community System has reduced cargo dwell time by nearly 30%, ensuring faster turnaround and improved service for shipping lines.
Looking ahead, continued investments and operational improvements are expected to solidify the Port of Dar es Salaam as a vital gateway for international trade. The enhanced capacity is likely to attract more global shipping companies, further boosting Tanzania’s role in regional commerce and contributing to broader economic development across East and Central Africa.
