Residents of Kinyerezi are witnessing a historic transformation as Phase Two of Operation Fungua Mitaa gains momentum, under the decisive leadership of Deputy Mayor and Ward Councillor John Ryoba Mrema.

The initiative, focused on rehabilitating all streets across the ward, is restoring accessibility, boosting local commerce, and improving essential services for residents in Tanzania’s commercial hub, Dar es Salaam.

On February 17, 2026, several streets, including Obama Street and Kifuru Street, were rehabilitated in a single day, marking a major milestone in Phase Two. The campaign builds on Phase One, which revitalized six streets, and now aims for comprehensive coverage across Kinyerezi. The operations include leveling damaged roads, laying high-quality gravel, and installing drainage structures to ensure durable, all-weather access.

Speaking during the site inspection at Kifuru Street, Deputy Mayor Mrema emphasized the social and economic significance of the project. “Our mission is clear: every street in Kinyerezi must be safe, accessible, and functional. We are committed to improving mobility, supporting small businesses, and ensuring residents can reach schools and healthcare facilities without barriers,” he said.

Chairman of Kifuru Street, Mr. Saidi Bakari Mkono  praised the initiative for its tangible impact on the community. “For decades, our streets were impassable during rains. Phase Two of Fungua Mitaa is changing that. We now see real action and hope for a lasting solution,” he said, adding that community engagement remains vital for sustaining improvements.

Residents also expressed optimism. A local trader, Aisha Salum, said the upgrades have already improved her daily life: “Before, transporting goods to market was difficult and costly. Now, delivery is faster, and my business can operate more efficiently. It feels like our voices are finally being heard.” Another resident, Hamisi Juma, highlighted the benefits for families: “Children can go to school safely, and medical emergencies are no longer delayed by bad roads. These changes mean everything to us.”

Alongside road rehabilitation, improvements in water supply have also been noted, reflecting a comprehensive approach to enhancing public services. Officials say the initiative exemplifies a model of community-driven development, where residents, leadership, and partners collaborate to achieve tangible results.

Experts believe Kinyerezi is emerging as a leading example of urban infrastructure development in Tanzania, combining visionary leadership with community participation. If sustained, the campaign is expected to transform Kinyerezi into a model ward, where reliable streets and improved services underpin socio-economic growth and inclusive urban living.

With Phase Two well underway, the ward’s leadership and residents remain committed to consolidating gains, ensuring that every street is rehabilitated and every community member benefits from lasting infrastructure improvements.
