The legacy of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere, Tanzania’s founding president and a towering figure in Africa’s liberation movement, continues to echo across generations.

This weekend, he was posthumously bestowed with the honorary title of ‘Professor of Harmony’ by the Tuko Sawa Society, a grassroots organisation working to promote social equity and community-led change.

The award ceremony, held at the Nyerere family home in Butiama District, located in Mara Region, was both symbolic and emotional. Receiving the award on behalf of his father was Madaraka Nyerere, himself a respected figure and the Society’s patron.

The ceremony also marked the official launch of Harmony Generation, a new sustainability campaign grounded in values that Mwalimu Nyerere championed: unity, self-reliance, equality, and peace.

Nyerere, who served as the first president of Tanzania from 1964 to 1985, was not only a statesman but also a philosopher. He championed a political ideology known as Ujamaa, a form of African socialism that emphasized communal living, economic justice, and national unity.

These values, according to the Society, make Nyerere a timeless model for leadership in today’s increasingly polarized world. “He was not just a politician; he was a teacher and moral compass,” said Dr. Regina Kessy Wilkinson, a UK-based Tanzanian anthropologist and the founder of Tuko Sawa Society. “This award celebrates his lifelong commitment to harmony—across people, politics, and generations.”

Dr. Wilkinson explained that the Harmony Generation initiative seeks to operationalize Nyerere’s legacy by empowering young people and communities through sustainability, inclusivity, and grassroots innovation. “We’re not just looking back; we’re building forward using Mwalimu’s philosophy as a compass,” she said.

The campaign will support local development projects, intergenerational dialogues, and creative solutions to issues such as climate change, youth unemployment, and civic engagement.

In his acceptance remarks, Madaraka Nyerere expressed gratitude on behalf of his family. “My father believed that peace, love, and unity were not slogans—but tools for building a better nation,” he said. He urged Tanzanians, especially youth, to embrace values that go beyond material success.

Madaraka further noted that harmony does not mean the absence of disagreement but rather the presence of mutual respect and purpose—ideals that his father sought to embed in Tanzania’s national identity.

As African nations continue to navigate development challenges and global instability, there’s renewed interest in leadership models rooted in ethical governance, social cohesion, and long-term thinking. Nyerere’s legacy offers precisely that.

Globally admired, Nyerere played a pivotal role in forming the Organisation of African Unity (now the African Union) and supported freedom struggles in nations like Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and South Africa. He was also a vocal advocate for dignity in global cooperation, particularly within the Non-Aligned Movement.

With the launch of Harmony Generation, Tuko Sawa hopes to spark a continent-wide dialogue on development that is people-centered, values-driven, and sustainable. And in the heart of Butiama, where it all began, the flame of Nyerere’s vision continues to burn—illuminating new paths for those who believe, like he did, that “without unity, there is no future.”
