Bukoba District Commissioner Erasto Sima has said 14 patients have been confirmed to have contracted cholera in Bukoba Municipality, with one reported death, so far.
He appealed to citizens to take precautionary measures, including washing hands with soap, before taking any meal and doing the same after using toilet.
He has as well called upon residents in Bukoba Municipal Council to ensure that they boil or treat drinking water.
“The first cholera patient was reported on January 4, this year in Bakoba Ward’s Kafuti Street while other patients were reported from different areas. To-date, about eleven patients were treated and discharged while two patients were still admitted to Nshambya District Hospital for treatment,” he said.
Mr Sima said the fight against the pandemic must involve all residents.
“It is a matter of life and death. The only known cause for the deadly disease is dirt in all forms. First and foremost, proper sanitation is one of the tools against the disease. It requires the highest degree of personal hygiene. This can be done. Let us all take heed,” he said.
He said the agenda of keeping the environment clean should be permanent.
“This should be routine for each household to ensure that they have decent toilets and garbage is disposed forthwith,” he said.
He directed Municipal health officials and Ward Executive Officers (WEOs) to ensure that surveillance teams are keeping a 24-hour monitoring and give a report on any suspected case. People should also be sensitized to maintain hygiene and drink boiled water, he said.
In December, last year (2023) the number of patients confirmed to have contracted Cholera in Missenyi district increased to seven patients with four confirmed deaths.
Four people died of the pandemic on November 29th, last year at Bugorora Ward’s Buchurago village, in Missenyi district while five patients were earlier admitted at the St Therese Omukajunguti hospital.
Meanwhile the Minister for Health Ms Ummy Mwalimu has said that six regions are still facing cholera outbreak, calling upon Regional Commissioners and health sector executives to continue instituting measures to control the spread of the disease.
Ms Mwalimu named the regions as Shinyanga, Ruvuma, Tabora, Simiyu, Mwanza and Kagera.
According to the minister, in 2023 cholera outbreak was reported in 12 regions of which 927 patients and 27 deaths were reported.
According to the Ministry of Health (MoH) officials, cholera is an infection of the bacterium Vibrio cholera. Symptoms may range from none, mild, to severe. The classic symptom is large amounts of watery diarrhea that lasts a few days.
Vomiting and muscle cramps may also occur. Diarrhoea can be so severe that it leads within hours to severe dehydration and electrolyte imbalance. It is spread mostly by water and food that has been contaminated with human feaces containing the bacteria.
Humans are the only mammals affected by cholera while risk factors of the disease include poor sanitation, not enough clean drinking water and poverty. Prevention involves improved sanitation and access to clean water.
Being a water-borne and filth- borne disease, cholera is no laughing matter. It is a highly contagious malady that can wreak havoc in a wider area within a very short span of time, leaving a trail of death in its wake.
Cholera affects an estimated 3-5 million people worldwide and causes 58,000- 130,000 deaths a year. It is downright disgraceful as the epidemic is all about coming into mouth contact with infected human faeces, he said.

WASHINGTON, Dec 3 (Reuters) – A human rights law group contracted by the U.S.
State Department to investigate atrocities against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar said on Monday there was an urgent need
to establish a criminal tribunal to bring those responsible to
justice.
A report released on Monday by the Washington-based Public International Law and Policy Group (PILPG), based on more than 1,000
interviews with Rohingya refugees who fled to Bangladesh, said there
were reasonable grounds to believe the Myanmar
military committed crimes against humanity, genocide and war crimes against the minority group.
“The international community is obliged to protect populations subjected to atrocity crimes by the own governments and ensure justice and accountability for such crimes,” the report said.
It called for “a politically viable choice to be made and the urgent establishment of an accountability mechanism or an immediate reference of the situation to the ICC (International Criminal Court).”
A report by United Nations investigators in August
found that Myanmar’s military carried out mass
killings and gang rapes of Rohingyas with “genocidal intent”
and the commander-in-chief and five generals should be prosecuted under international law.
That report called for the U.N. Security Council to impose an arms embargo,
targeted sanctions and for the suspects to be tried by an ad hoc tribunal or referred to the ICC.
However, diplomats say veto powers China and Russia are likely to protect Myanmar from
U.N. action.
The PILPG’s interviews with refugees formed the basis of a U.S.
State Department report released in September, but the U.S.
government stopped short of labeling the atrocities crimes against humanity,
genocide or war crimes.
The State Department report, the subject of internal debate that
delayed its rollout for nearly a month, referred to a “well-planned and coordinated” campaign of mass killings, gang rapes and other atrocities.
A declaration of genocide by the U.S. government,
which has only gone as far as labeling the crackdown “ethnic cleansing,” could have legal implications that
may commit Washington to stronger punitive
measures against Myanmar. This has made some in the Trump administration wary of issuing
such an assessment.
The lawyers’ report, based on the work of 18 investigators
from 11 countries, found that Rohingya men, women, and children were the victims of “mass shootings and aerial bombardments, gang rapes and severe beatings, torture and burning, and attacks from flamethrowers and grenade launchers.”
It focused on the build up to and conduct of “major systematic attacks” in Rakhine State between Aug.
25 and Sept. 4 last year.
“These attacks were all part of a highly coordinated military campaign that required tactical and logistical planning,” it said.
“Specifically, interviewees reported the use of aircraft, artillery, and the transport of thousands of soldiers to remote villages. Furthermore, Myanmar armed forces executed this campaign in multiple places across northern Rakhine State within a matter of hours or days.”
Critically, the report found that even as the Rohingya fled their villages for Bangladesh they were fired on by military helicopters while the Myanmar Navy sought to sink overcrowded ferries, showing that the campaign went beyond the aim of
merely driving the people out, to one of eradication.
“The scale and severity of the attacks and abuses … suggest that, in the minds of the perpetrators, the goal was not just to expel, but also to exterminate the Rohingya,” the report said.
The military in Myanmar, where Buddhism is the
main religion, has denied accusations of ethnic cleansing and says its actions were part of a fight against terrorism.

‘I pulled the bus over at the stop and I saw something moving,’ Santana told local media.
‘We then realised it was a sloth walking towards the cars.’
The pair, not wanting the slow-moving sloth to be hit by vehicles,
allowed the sloth on board.
With their new, rather unusual, passenger in tow, they set off to
the next station where police officers were on hand to help.
Santana, who has spent 17 years working as a bus driver, said
it was the first time he had seen a sloth in the road.
‘On that day, by chance, I was on duty and I took
that bus,’ he said. ‘Just as well it happened so we could save the little creature.’
Baffled passengers were amazed to find the animal climbing up the poles and handlebars of the bus in Recife, Brazil
Albuquerque told local media he did not hesitate to grab the long-clawed animal in order
to rescue it.
‘I love animals, I always carry food, water and some remedies
for wounds to give to street animals,’ he said.
‘When I saw the sloth, I even thought about trying to return it to the nearby
woods, but I got scared that someone would snatch it and I thought it better to take it to the
police.’
With the sloth on board, it climbed up onto the handrails – causing a flurry of activity by passengers
who wanted to get a better look of the animal.
‘The passengers found it curious, everyone was taking photos,’ Albuquerque said.
‘I’d seen many agoutis and caimans around, mostly at night, but it’s the
first time I’ve seen a sloth.’
When the bus, which had been travelling from one side of Reclife city
to the other, arrived at its destination, Santana and Albuquerque handed the furry passenger over to police officers to return it to the wild.
‘I’m thrilled, I thank God for the opportunity to save this
animal, Albuquerque added. ‘People should take greater
care of nature. The deforestation in that area is terrible.
So many animals die there, it pains my heart.’
