New Testing for Graduate Teachers Announced

Starting next year, graduate teachers in Tanzania will face stringent skills assessments before joining the public service. The Education, Science, and Technology Minister, Prof.

Adolf Mkenda, highlighted these measures during the 2024 English Digital Teaching Skills competition for primary school teachers in Dar es Salaam.

Prof. Mkenda explained that these tests are part of a new recruitment procedure aimed at selecting the most qualified teachers. The skills assessments will align with global standards to ensure quality education. This initiative responds to criticisms of the current employment system, focusing on improving teacher competency and effectiveness in the classroom.

Prof. Mkenda emphasized that the primary goal is to elevate the teaching standards in Tanzania to match those in developed countries. This aligns with the broader educational reforms underway in the country, which include the updated Education and Training Policy launched in 2023. The policy aims to revolutionize the education system by addressing gaps in teacher training and curriculum delivery.

Moreover, the ministry has launched a comprehensive training program for over 10,000 teachers across the nation, aimed at equipping them with the necessary skills to implement the new curriculum effectively. This phased rollout is expected to continue until all educators are adequately prepared to meet the new standards

Critics have pointed out the challenges associated with this abrupt change, suggesting a more gradual approach might be beneficial. However, Prof. Mkenda reassured stakeholders that the government is committed to a methodical implementation, ensuring a smooth transition to the new system.

In addition to the skills testing, the government has initiated a “tracer study” to follow up on vocational training graduates, assessing the relevance and impact of their education on their employability. This study aims to fine-tune vocational training programs to better meet market needs

The ultimate aim is to foster a robust educational environment that supports national development and prepares students for a competitive global market
