Minister of Industry and Trade, Dr. Selemani Jafo, recently launched a new factory in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam, focused on producing mattresses, clothing, and canvas materials.

This new development is expected to play a key role in boosting the local manufacturing industry and contributing to the country’s economic growth.

At the inauguration, Dr. Jafo expressed his excitement, noting that the establishment of the factory was a major step toward adding value to local raw materials, particularly cotton. Tanzania has long been a major exporter of raw cotton, and now, with the rise of such industries, there is a significant shift toward processing these materials locally, which will, in turn, strengthen the economy.

The factory has already created jobs for over 600 Tanzanian youths, and it’s anticipated that the number will rise to 1,000 once the factory reaches full capacity. Dr. Jafo urged the employees to maintain professionalism and integrity in their work, encouraging them to contribute not only to the factory’s success but also to their own personal growth and development.

This move is in line with the government’s broader plan to industrialize the country. In 2024, the Ministry of Industry and Trade launched the ‘Viwanda Tanzania’ program, which aims to create six million jobs by 2030 by fostering industrial development across all regions. The new factory is a tangible representation of this vision.

Additionally, Tanzania is making strides in the industrial sector with initiatives like the opening of the Tanzania Industrial Research and Development Organization (TIRDO) laboratory, which focuses on research and training in the leather and textile sectors. This facility is expected to attract both local and international investors, further strengthening the country’s industrial base.

The launch of this factory in Kigamboni reflects the government’s commitment to creating a favorable environment for industrial growth, emphasizing the importance of utilizing domestic resources. It’s a significant step forward in Tanzania’s journey toward economic self-reliance and long-term sustainable development.
