National ID Authority Launches SMS Tracking Service Nationwide

According to the authority, the system has been designed to provide step-by-step updates, enhancing transparency and reducing uncertainty that has previously driven many applicants to make repeated visits simply to seek information
December 30, 2025

The national identification authority has introduced a new short message service that allows applicants to retrieve their unique identification numbers and track the status of their national ID applications remotely, a move expected to significantly reduce congestion at service offices and cut travel-related costs for citizens.

Under the new arrangement, applicants who have already registered for a national identity card can send a simple text message to a designated shortcode and instantly receive their national identification number. The same platform also enables users to monitor the progress of their applications from submission through processing to readiness for collection, without the need for repeated physical visits to offices.

Officials say the service is part of a broader digital transformation agenda aimed at improving access to public services and easing pressure on frontline service points, particularly in urban centres where long queues have been a persistent challenge. By shifting routine inquiries to mobile-based platforms, the authority hopes to allow staff to focus more on registration and production processes.

The introduction of the SMS service is expected to benefit applicants in rural and peri-urban areas most, where distances to service centres are often long and transport costs high. With mobile phone usage widespread across the country, the authority believes the initiative will bridge information gaps and ensure that applicants remain informed throughout the lifecycle of their applications.

According to the authority, the system has been designed to provide step-by-step updates, enhancing transparency and reducing uncertainty that has previously driven many applicants to make repeated visits simply to seek information. The move is also intended to improve public confidence in the national identification system by making it more responsive and user-centred.

National identification systems are widely recognised as a critical foundation for effective governance, service delivery, and economic inclusion. In Tanzania, the national ID programme plays a key role in enabling access to essential services such as banking, mobile communications, health insurance, and voter registration. The use of SMS technology for public services has gained momentum globally, particularly in countries seeking cost-effective digital solutions that do not rely on internet access. Experts note that SMS-based platforms remain among the most inclusive digital tools, especially in regions where smartphones and reliable data connections are not universal.

As governments increasingly digitise public services, secure and accessible national identification numbers are becoming central to service integration and planning. The authority has indicated that the new SMS service may later be integrated with other digital platforms to provide a seamless experience across government services.

While the initiative has been welcomed by many applicants, the authority has urged users to ensure that their registration details, particularly mobile phone numbers, are accurate to avoid delays or misinformation. It has also reiterated its commitment to data protection and confidentiality, assuring the public that the system has been developed with appropriate safeguards.

The rollout of the SMS tracking service marks another step in modernising public administration and reflects growing efforts to bring essential government services closer to citizens through practical, technology-driven solutions.
