Namibia’s first president and a leading figure in its fight for independence, Samuel Nujoma has passed away at the age of 95.
His death on Sunday, February 9, 2025, marks the end of an era for Namibia and leaves a significant legacy in the country, across Africa, and around the world.
Before Nujoma became president, he was a key leader in the country’s long struggle for freedom. His unwavering determination played a central role in Namibia’s path to independence from colonial rule, and his efforts made him one of the continent’s most admired liberation figures.
In recognition of his important role in Namibia’s history, as well as his relationship with Tanzania, the Tanzanian government renamed one of Dar es Salaam’s major roads in his honor during the 1980s. The road, now called Sam Nujoma Road, runs from Mwenge to the Ubungo area. This gesture was part of a broader expression of solidarity between Tanzania and Namibia, two nations that shared a common goal of liberation from colonial forces.
Previously known as Mlimani Road, the change was made to celebrate Nujoma’s leadership and his close connection to Tanzania’s own liberation movement. Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, Tanzania’s first president, recognized Nujoma’s tireless efforts and wanted to ensure his contributions were acknowledged by the Tanzanian people.
Sheikh Khamis Mataka, a historian with deep knowledge of Dar es Salaam’s history, shared that the renaming of this road was not only symbolic but also a lasting tribute to Nujoma’s fight for freedom and the close ties that existed between the two countries at the time.
