The Muhimbili Orthopaedic Institute (MOI) has reported an alarming increase in motorcycle-related accidents, with an average of 700 accident victims treated monthly, 60% of whom are involved in motorcycle incidents.
This was highlighted by Dr. Lemeri Mchome, MOI’s Acting Executive Director, during a recent event where Watu Credit Company donated supplies to aid victims of these accidents.
The donation is part of a broader effort to address the significant public health challenge posed by motorcycle, or ‘bodaboda,’ accidents. Dr. Mchome emphasized the critical need for preventive measures, advocating for substantial investment in road safety education and stricter adherence to traffic regulations.
“Investing in preventive measures for ‘bodaboda’ accidents is paramount. Educating both riders and the public about traffic rules can significantly reduce the incidence of these often-fatal accidents,” said Dr. Mchome. He urged motorcycle riders to exercise heightened vigilance to help meet the United Nations (UN) goal of halving road traffic deaths by 2030.
In tandem with MOI’s efforts, other stakeholders are also taking action. Ilala District Commissioner Edward Mpogolo recently underscored the importance of regular road safety training for motorcycle riders. At a certification ceremony for 1,518 riders registered by the Land Transport Regulatory Authority (LATRA), Mpogolo revealed that 96% of the motorcycle accident victims are youths aged 15 to 35

LATRA’s Director General, Habibu Suluo, shared insights into ongoing initiatives to enhance road safety. These include mandatory online training for riders during their registration process and continuous efforts to certify qualified riders, with over 2,500 certified to date
Despite these efforts, the challenges persist. Deputy Speaker Mussa Azzan Zungu has called on the government to develop comprehensive strategies to regulate the behavior of motorcyclists, citing their frequent disregard for traffic rules as a major cause of accidents. He highlighted the need for more stringent measures, including regular checks and licensing enforcement, to curb the rising number of road incidents
The collaboration between MOI, government authorities, and private sector entities like Watu Credit Company is crucial in addressing this issue. By combining resources and expertise, these initiatives aim to create a safer environment for all road users in Tanzania.
