Morogoro authorities are seeking 40 billion Tanzanian shillings from the government to renovate the iconic Jamhuri Stadium.

The revamped facility is expected to meet international standards, making it a prime venue for hosting national and global sports events.

Speaking during a regional development meeting, Regional Commissioner Adam Malima stressed the importance of upgrading the stadium, noting its potential to transform not only the sports scene in Morogoro but also the region’s economy.

Malima explained that the current state of Jamhuri Stadium has limited its ability to host significant events. The proposed renovations aim to change that by providing modern facilities that can accommodate high-profile competitions and attract athletes from across the country and beyond.

“This is about more than sports—it’s about creating opportunities for young talent in Morogoro and turning the stadium into a beacon of progress,” Malima said.

He added that the improved stadium would offer a professional environment for training and competitions, which could inspire the next generation of athletes and elevate the region’s reputation in the sporting world.

The stadium upgrade is also seen as a way to showcase Morogoro’s natural beauty and cultural heritage to visitors. Malima highlighted the synergy between sports and tourism, pointing out that hosting large-scale events could attract tourists who might also explore attractions like the Uluguru Mountains and Mikumi National Park.

“Imagine someone coming here for a football match and staying to hike in the Uluguru Mountains or visit Mikumi. That’s the kind of impact we’re aiming for—a ripple effect that boosts multiple sectors,” he explained.

The requested funding will cover essential upgrades, including modern seating, better lighting, enhanced player facilities, and improved security measures. Malima emphasized that government backing is crucial to bringing this vision to life.

“We’re looking to the government to partner with us in realizing this dream. It’s not just for Morogoro but for the entire nation. This stadium can set a new benchmark for what regional sports infrastructure can achieve,” he said.

The renovation project aligns with Tanzania’s national goals of improving sports infrastructure and encouraging regional development. If approved, the Jamhuri Stadium could become a model for how investment in sports facilities can spur economic growth, promote tourism, and foster community pride.
