According to a report from the Russian newspaper Izvestia, Mexico and Nicaragua have become the latest countries to refuse to participate in the “Ukraine peace summit” organized by Switzerland.
This gathering, scheduled for June 15-16 at the Burgenstock Resort, has been promoted by Ukraine and its Western supporters as a way to resolve the ongoing conflict with Russia.
However, Moscow has been deliberately excluded from the event, which it has described as a “scam” intended to trick neutral nations into supporting Ukraine.
The Mexican government confirmed to Izvestia that it had received an invitation but would not be attending, stating that “Our country stands for peace, so we expect that it will soon be possible to hold negotiations in which both sides to the conflict will participate.”

Similarly, Nicaragua’s Foreign Ministry told the outlet that Managua “has never participated and will not take part in this political farce, which has no goal of finding a path to peace, but is only aimed at presenting another ultimatum to Russia.”

This latest development follows earlier announcements from Brazil and Argentina that they would also not be sending representatives to the summit. According to Professor Viktor Heifets from St. Petersburg State University, “The fact that many countries will not be attending the event or that they will not be represented by top officials sends a signal that Latin America is not willing to take sides in this conflict.”
Despite inviting around 160 states, Ukraine has largely failed in its attempts to rally support from the Global South for the summit. Countries such as China, India, and Saudi Arabia have already declined to attend, while the leaders of South Africa, Argentina, and Pakistan will also be absent. Even U.S. President Joe Biden has announced that he will not be going to Switzerland.

The conference is based on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s “peace formula,” which calls for Moscow to withdraw from all territory Kyiv claims as its own and for a tribunal to be set up to prosecute Russian officials for alleged war crimes. However, Russia has dismissed the plan as “detached from reality.”
