The Minister for Education, Science, and Technology, Prof. Adolf Mkenda, has expressed heartfelt gratitude to teachers across Tanzania in celebration of World Teachers’ Day on October 5, 2024.
Speaking in Njombe Region, where he marked the occasion alongside local educators, Prof. Mkenda acknowledged the critical role teachers play in shaping the future of the nation through the education and nurturing of children and young people.
“Today is a day to honor and thank teachers for their hard work and dedication. On behalf of the people of Tanzania, I say thank you, teachers. Today is a day to lift your spirits and encourage you to continue your noble work,” stated Prof. Mkenda.
He noted that the government remains committed to improving the status and welfare of teachers, recognizing their immense contribution to national development. As part of this commitment, Prof. Mkenda revealed that the government, in partnership with various stakeholders, has developed new guidelines aimed at providing incentives to teachers. These incentives are designed to uplift the teaching profession and give teachers the recognition they rightly deserve.
“This initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to implement the 2014 Education and Training Policy, updated in 2023. The revised policy emphasizes the need for teachers to be valued and acknowledged for their critical role in nation-building,” Prof. Mkenda explained.
He further stated that these measures are meant to motivate teachers and ensure they feel appreciated for their contributions. “Teachers are the foundation of our education system. If they are empowered, motivated, and given the respect they deserve, the entire nation benefits,” he added.
The international theme for this year’s World Teachers’ Day focuses on the importance of listening to and involving teachers in key discussions and decisions regarding education. This theme aligns with Tanzania’s efforts to ensure that teachers’ voices are heard in shaping the future of education in the country.
