The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Merck Foundation, Professor Frank Stangenberg Haverkamp, reaffirmed the Foundation’s commitment to advancing health and wellness in Africa, Asia, and beyond.
During his speech at the 11th Merck Foundation conference in Dar es Salaam on October 29, 2024, Professor Stangenberg highlighted the Foundation’s focus on expanding healthcare accessibility and promoting better health standards.
The Merck Foundation, a renowned global organisation, has dedicated its efforts to tackling significant healthcare challenges in underserved regions, particularly in developing nations where access to quality health services is limited.
“Our mission is to improve the quality of life by addressing healthcare gaps and strengthening the healthcare workforce,” said Professor Stangenberg.
To accomplish this, the Foundation provides scholarships and sponsors educational programs to develop skills at various levels within the healthcare sector.
Over the years, the Merck Foundation has invested in scholarship programs that support health professionals, including doctors, nurses, and technicians, with a range of specialisations.

These scholarships allow them to access advanced training in areas such as oncology, cardiology, and reproductive health, crucially enhancing the healthcare expertise available in their countries.
Beyond formal education, the Foundation also offers workshops and seminars that promote better health practices and overall wellness.
Professor Stangenberg emphasised the importance of these educational initiatives, stating that they create a more informed healthcare community and help develop locally relevant health solutions.
One of the Foundation’s key projects is the “Merck More Than a Mother” campaign, which addresses infertility stigma and seeks to empower women by raising awareness about reproductive health and access to fertility care.
The Foundation also works closely with government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and academic institutions to maximise its impact and reach within local communities.
As the Merck Foundation enters its next decade of operations, it remains focused on improving healthcare systems and creating sustainable solutions that address the pressing health needs of vulnerable populations.
The Foundation’s work, particularly through its programs in Africa and Asia, highlights its commitment to reducing health disparities and supporting the development of resilient healthcare infrastructure.
