Maria Nyerere, the widow of Tanzania’s founding leader Julius Nyerere, has appealed to Tanzanians to hold firmly onto unity and to use dialogue as the main tool for addressing the challenges currently facing the nation.
Speaking at her home in Msasani, Dar es Salaam, Mama Maria shared a message centered on hope, patience, and togetherness. She encouraged citizens not to be discouraged by difficult moments, noting that Tanzania has faced and overcome many trials since the early days of independence.
Reflecting on the country’s past, she reminded Tanzanians of the journey taken under the leadership of Mwalimu Julius Nyerere, a period marked by sacrifice, discipline, and a strong sense of national purpose. According to her, the values that guided the nation during those formative years remain just as important today. She emphasized that unity and open conversation were key pillars in building the nation and should continue to guide public life.
Mama Maria acknowledged that differences of opinion are unavoidable in any society. However, she cautioned against allowing those differences to turn into deep divisions. In her view, respectful dialogue offers a safer and more constructive path, especially during times when tensions may arise. She urged citizens to listen to one another, show understanding, and avoid actions that could weaken social harmony.
