Two Malaysian navy helicopters collided mid-air during a parade rehearsal, resulting in the tragic loss of all 10 crew members on board, as confirmed by the navy.

The collision took place at the Lumut naval base in Perak state on Tuesday morning, as per the navy’s statement. Despite immediate response, all victims were declared deceased at the scene and transported to the naval base’s military hospital for identification.

Footage circulating on local media depicted several helicopters flying in formation, with one rotor accidentally clipping another before both aircraft plummeted to the ground.

Local authorities verified the authenticity of the video, and the Malaysian navy pledged to conduct a thorough investigation into the accident’s cause.

The helicopters involved were a Eurocopter AS555SN Fennec, carrying three crew members, and an AW139 maritime operation helicopter with seven personnel, according to the navy. The AW139 is manufactured by AgustaWestland, a subsidiary of Leonardo, an Italian defense contractor, while the Fennec is produced by Airbus, a European multinational defense conglomerate.

Reports from local media indicated that the AW139 crashed at a sports complex within the naval base, while the Fennec collided with a nearby swimming pool.

Photographs revealed the extensive damage to the Fennec, strewn across the naval base’s stadium track, with rescue teams and debris scattered around.

Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Nordin disclosed that the helicopters were rehearsing for the Royal Malaysian Navy’s 90th anniversary parade scheduled for Saturday. Efforts were underway to confirm the identities of the crew members, all of whom were under 40 years old, stated Mohamed Khaled.

Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim extended condolences to the victims’ families, describing the incident as “heart-wrenching and soul-wrenching.” He assured that an immediate investigation would be launched by the Ministry of Defense, specifically the Royal Malaysian Navy, to determine the crash’s cause.

Although incidents involving helicopters are not uncommon in Malaysia, last month’s crash involving a Malaysian coast guard helicopter in the Strait of Malacca resulted in no fatalities. However, in 2016, a Eurocopter AS350 crash in the state of Sarawak claimed the lives of several individuals, including a deputy minister.
